Orthodontic Emergencies

What happens if the appliance breaks or bands loosen?

Loose Wire

Loose Wire

If the wire gets loose, and you can’t get to the office, you may snip it off with a nail clipper or a small wire cutter. If you can’t do this, use the wax to cover it up which will protect your soft tissue.

Loose Band

Loose Band

If the band is loose but still attached to the wire, cover it with the wax to prevent discomfort. Call the office for an emergency appointment. If the band comes out completely, bring it with you next appointment. Do not use Head Gear or elastics if the band is loose.

Broken Bracket

Broken Bracket

If you have a broken bracket and you are not in pain, you do not need to do anything, just wait for your next visit. If you are in pain, cover it with the wax and call for an emergency appointment.
